Imagine an idyllic (perhaps unrealistic) post-scarcity sort of world. "Post-scarcity" in the sense that there's no real scarcity to materials or resources: we have the technology to replicate anything at essentially zero cost. Even better, we've got sorts of cool space travel and terraforming sort of technology so we have effectively unlimited amounts of pristine land at our disposal.
What will drive our wars?

After perusing a few AMA members' LJ profiles, I noticed alot of you are friends on LJ.
How many of you met and friended each other through AMA, and how many of you were LJ friends before AMA? Another way of phrasing it might be: what does AMA mean to you??
ETA: It seems like AMA's pretty darn epic. xD

I got my cup halfway through my last period, so I only used it for a day or two, and not overnight at all. I just recently finished my first *full* period with the cup. I used it day and night for like 4 days straight, and when I took it out, was surprised to discover that I only lightly spotted for the next day or two, that was it. this is not normal for me, I'm normally pretty heavy for at least 6 days... can cup use actually shorten the amount of time you bleed? I'm wondering if the suction kinda sucks everything out faster or anythying.. not that I'm complaining. though this being only one cycle, it could have easily been coincidence.

When I first heard about this community a year or so ago, I didn't think it would be terribly interesting, I thought it was a giant meme "what did you eat for breakfast, who do you think is dreamy" and while there is some of that, and I do find it amusing, I was happy to find there is lots of interesting debate that goes on here. Some threads have even made me change my opinion on things I didn't expect, which I think is pretty awesome!
On to the actual question:
What do you think makes a good debate? Who do you think is best at it? Why?

has any one had any experience with using wild carrot seed, wild yam or cotton root bark as birth control? (or as a birth control suppliment)
I'm on the pill right now and plan to stay on it as long as it doesn't start messing with my emotions /hormones too bad.
also, does any one know any good sites for finding herbs, preferably fresh, b/c I'm SOL for finding fresh herbs like that in my area without growing them myself (which I'll probably end up doing any way)
thanks in advance for any help!

Two books in a row now I've picked up, read through quickly being unable to put them down and then was left at the end with a feeling of not being sure if I liked them or not. Just a slightly disappointed "huh" instead of the highly irritated "ugh" that comes from hating a book or the almost orgasmic "...wow" that comes from loving it. The first was Darkly Dreaming Dexter and the latest was Wicked.
So AMA what was the last book or books that simply left you with "huh" over "ugh" or "...wow"? What about the book/story made you feel that way? What did you feel it was missing?
There will most likely be spoilers to various books in the comments.

With children (in particular) having severe peanut allergies, many schools have banned peanut butter or have it as a strong guideline for something to not be brought to school. This I'm sure is not news to anyone.
I found out the other day that the high school my sister attends has (more or less) banned oranges from being brought to school. This is after an Educational Assistant "passed by someone eating an orange at the beginning of the year" (says my sister) and went into anaphylactic shock and the rule was brought into effect.
My question to you is should these sort of rules be put into effect at all?.. after one person (a staff member, not an unaware child) reacts to it? Do you think the rules/guidelines are more acceptable at an elementary school rather than secondary school setting?

Don't worry, someone else is cooking the turkey. AMAers, your task is to cook a side dish/dessert/salad/whatever.

| Need help in narrowing down cup size/brand |
[12 Nov 2009|09:11am] |
Hello again. Many thanks to all that helped me in my first post about finding my cervix, etc. I really appreciated it :). Now, I'm trying to find out which size and which brand of menstrual cup will fit and work best for me. Here's the info I've recently compiled about my body. The week before my period started, I carefully located where the cervix sits. When I'm not on my period, it's more or less in the center, about 2 inches in. Four days ago, my period began for this month, and I again felt around for the cervix. It was lower, now about 1 inch in, and had moved a bit further back towards the tailbone.
With this information, I no longer think a Diva is the right brand, but I could still use some help.
And one last question on a minor note, is it normal for your period to go super heavy after feeling for the cervix? 'Cause that's what happened this time around. I felt for the cervix on Monday, ('cause my period started up slow on Sunday and usually hits full force the following day) and it was like super heavy. I had to change pads almost every hour for the next 2 days, and leaks were CRAZY. Did I mess something up down there?
Again, tips appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've been applying to work in this homeless shelter for the past few months. I've submitted my application twice (for two different positions in the same place), called the office numerous amounts of time and they always tell me that they'll keep me in mind. The last I spoke with them was October 15th. Now I see that they're hiring again for the same position I applied to the first time.
Their office is no more than ten minutes away from me, and they list their address on their website.
Would it be too forward of me to pay them a visit with another application?
One of the women I talked to had told me that they get many application submissions for the position I'm applying for so I'm just wondering if going there will lessen my chances of getting on their good side.

Halp. While browsing eBay, I found a nice pair of pants that I'd really like to have. But I am confused about the American sizing... the sizes available are 25, 28, 30 and 32. I'm a German size 38... what do I do?

I tend to like one-syllable names.
curmudgeonlet tends to like old-fashioned names.
suibhne_geilt tends to like Russian-sounding names.
What kind of names do you like best? Celtic names? Biblical names? Hippie names? You don't necessarily need to give examples, just a category. :)
